Cookie Policy

UntangleTools uses exactly three types of cookies. Here's what each one does, why it exists, and what it categorically does not do.

The basics

What are cookies?

Cookies are tiny text files that a website places in your browser when you visit. Think of them as a sticky note your browser keeps on the site's behalf โ€” nothing more. They can't run code, can't access other files on your device, and they only talk to the domain that set them.

Websites use cookies for two broad reasons: functional ones (remembering your settings so you don't have to reconfigure them every visit) and analytical or advertising ones (understanding how the site is used or funding it through ads). We use both โ€” and we tell you exactly which ones below.

Full breakdown

The cookies we use

Three cookies, three purposes. Nothing hidden, nothing vague.

Theme Preference

First-party ยท Functional

When you pick a colour preset โ€” Midnight, Ocean, Ember, or any other theme โ€” UntangleTools saves that choice in your browser's localStorage so the next time you visit, the site loads in your preferred palette instantly. No server ever sees this value. It never leaves your device.

PurposeRestore your chosen colour theme on return visits

Google AdSense ยท DoubleClick

Third-party ยท Advertising

UntangleTools displays ads served by Google AdSense to keep the platform free forever. Google's ad system sets the DoubleClick cookie (IDE, DSID) in your browser to serve ads and measure their performance. Google may use this cookie โ€” along with your browsing history across other sites โ€” to show you personalised advertisements. We have no access to this data; it is governed entirely by Google's own privacy infrastructure.

PurposeServe ads & fund free access to all UntangleTools tools
Third-party advertising

Google AdSense
how the ads work

01

Who sets the cookie

Google LLC, operating under google.com and doubleclick.net โ€” not UntangleTools. When an ad loads on our pages, Google's servers communicate directly with your browser and set their own cookies. We are the publisher; we have no write access to those cookies.

02

The DoubleClick cookie (IDE)

Google's primary ad-delivery cookie is named IDE and lives under doubleclick.net. It records ad impressions and clicks to prevent you from seeing the same ad on a loop, measure ad effectiveness, and โ€” if you haven't opted out โ€” personalise ads based on sites you've visited previously.

03

Personalisation & your options

By default, Google may show you personalised ads. You can turn this off at any time by visiting Google's Ad Settings at g.co/adsettings โ€” no account required. You can also opt out of interest-based ads industry-wide at aboutads.info.

04

Why we use AdSense

Every tool on UntangleTools is free, and we intend to keep it that way permanently. AdSense revenue is our only income stream. Ads fund the infrastructure, the time spent building and maintaining tools, and new features. Blocking ads is your right โ€” but they're how we keep the lights on.

Privacy commitments

What we categorically
do not do

We never collect your name, email, or any personally identifiable information via cookies

We never store conversion inputs, token text, color codes, or calculation results server-side โ€” all tool computation is 100% client-side

We never sell, rent, or share cookie data with any party other than Google AdSense (described above)

We never fingerprint your device or build a shadow profile of your behaviour across sessions

We never use cookies to gate features โ€” everything works even if you block non-essential cookies

Browser settings

Every modern browser lets you block, delete, or audit cookies from Settings โ†’ Privacy โ†’ Cookies. Blocking all cookies will not break any UntangleTools converter โ€” every tool runs 100% client-side with no server dependency.

Opt out of ad personalisation

VisitGoogle Ad Settingsto turn off personalised ads, or use the industry-wide opt-out ataboutads.info. Ads will still appear, they just won't be tailored to you.

Clear your theme preference

To erase your saved theme, open your browser's developer tools (F12), go to Application โ†’ Local Storage โ†’ untangletools.com, and delete the untangle_theme key. On your next visit the site loads with the default theme.

TL;DR: We use Vercel Analytics (anonymised, no personal data), a localStorage key for your theme preference (never leaves your device), and Google AdSense (third-party, personalised ads, opt-out available). That's it. No tracking profiles. No data sales. All tools work client-side.
